Growing in Grace by Maury Johnston

Inspired by her childhood in Tupelo, Maury has created a beautiful collection of memories and nostalgia. "In creating my collection “Growing in Grace,” I hope others can reflect on their own experiences of growing up and resonate with my paintings," said Maury.

Rosy Cheeks and Pointed Feet
This collection was influenced by the charming flaws found in everyday life. Having grown up with three younger sisters, Maury came to value the disorder and unpredictability that accompany childhood. When thinking back on these memories, her goal was to encapsulate the spirit of childhood as a period where happiness and development stem from embracing our imperfections.

First Pair II
"While working through this collection, I was inspired by paintings from artists like Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt. Degas's ability to capture the grace and movement of everyday moments and Cassatt's tender portrayals of domestic life influenced my focus on the beauty found in the imperfections of childhood. Additionally, as I worked in the Caron Gallery, I drew inspiration from the art I encountered daily, particularly the pieces from Adam Trest, Ellen Langford, and Kimberley Zuckley. Their unique styles and vibrant expressions influenced me as I worked on this collection," said Maury.

Look, Mama!
At first, Maury had a hard time bringing her ideas together into a coherent series. It was a challenge to find the right way to translate her vision into a unified collection that truly captured what she wanted to express. However, as she started painting, the process became more natural. The emotions and concepts Maury aimed to convey began to flow effortlessly, and the paintings seemed to breathe life onto the canvas. The initial struggle ultimately led to a fulfilling experience as the collection took form and her vision came to fruition.

Of course, I Can
"I hope viewers find their own stories within these paintings, seeing echoes of their children or their own childhood experiences. By blending vibrant colors, patterns, and a mix of modern and classic styles, I seek to create art that resonates emotionally and invites reflection. Ultimately, I want my work to inspire viewers to appreciate their own experiences and find joy in the imperfect, beautiful moments of life."

Little Dreams, Big Dreamer
Maury can't wait for everyone to enjoy the collection, and she really hopes it brings people as much joy and inspiration as it has brought her!
