Treeline: Exploring the Beauty at the Edges
Adam Trest’s newest collection, Treeline, is now live at Caron Gallery. Inspired by the meeting point between forest and field, this collection explores the unexpected beauty that can emerge where two different worlds come together.
There is something special about the edge of a landscape. It is not quite forest and not quite field, but a space where the two meet, overlap, and create something entirely their own.
That idea became the starting point for Adam Trest’s newest collection, Treeline. Working in acrylic, Adam explores the relationship between color, form, and space while considering what happens where one thing ends and another begins.
Inspired by the Edge Effect
Adam’s inspiration for Treeline came from the ecological concept known as the “edge effect.” In nature, the boundary between two ecosystems can support more activity than either ecosystem does on its own. The forest provides shelter while the field provides open space and food, creating a unique environment where animals and plants from both areas can interact.
Adam found himself drawn to that idea beyond its ecological meaning.
“That idea stayed with me past the subject matter itself. I started to see the same principle at work in color and composition: edge effect isn't only ecological, it's optical too.”
In his paintings, the meeting of two colors can create a similar kind of interaction. Each color changes the way the other is perceived, just as the forest and field influence one another at their shared boundary.
This exploration of contrast and connection became an important part of Treeline, with Adam using color, positive and negative space, and organic forms to create moments of visual tension and harmony.
At the heart of Treeline is a simple idea: something interesting happens at the edges.
The place where forest meets field. Where one color meets another. Where positive space gives way to negative space. Where familiar forms begin to feel unexpected.
Adam’s paintings encourage us to spend a little more time with those moments and notice what happens in the space between.
