New Artist: Stephen Phillips

A New Perspective in Clay

Welcoming Our Newest Ceramic Artist to the Gallery

We are delighted to welcome Stephen Phillips as the newest ceramic artist in our gallery! Based in Crawford, Mississippi, Stephen creates thoughtfully crafted ceramic vessels that balance function, simplicity, and artistic expression. His work celebrates the beauty of handmade pottery, inviting viewers to appreciate not only the finished piece but also the subtle details, textures, and individuality that make each vessel unique.

A Lifelong Connection to Clay

Stephen’s artistic journey began long before his formal training. Growing up, he was fascinated by the arts and often experimented with mixing dirt from his backyard with water to create figures. That early curiosity grew into a lasting passion for working with clay.

His formal study of ceramics began at East Mississippi Community College, where he developed foundational skills in hand-building and wheel-throwing. He earned his Associate of Arts degree in 2008 before continuing his studies at Mississippi University for Women where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2013.

Since then, Stephen has shared his knowledge and passion for ceramics through teaching, demonstrations, and artist talks at various venues.

Art Rooted in Faith

At the heart of Stephen’s creative process is a deeply personal connection to his spirituality and faith. He often reflects on the act of creation itself, bringing a sense of intention and meaning to each piece he makes. His foundation for creating comes from Jeremiah 18:2-6. Through the tactile process of shaping clay, Stephen explores a broader appreciation for the beauty of creation. His vessels remind us that everyday objects can hold a special significance, connecting craftsmanship, contemplation, and the natural world.

From Crawford, Mississippi, to the Gallery

In 2015, Stephen established Stephen’s Potter House Productions, a small studio nestled in the countryside of his hometown of Crawford, Mississippi. From this space, he continues to develop his practice and create work that reflects his distinctive approach to ceramics.

His work has been exhibited and sold at the MUW Eugenia Summer Gallery, the Rosenzweig Arts Center, the R. E. Hunt Museum, and the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art. His ceramics are also part of the permanent collection at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Mississippi. Additional exhibitions include Companion Gallery in Tennessee and Charlie Cummings Gallery in Florida.

Among his accomplishments, Stephen received the South Arts Southern Prize & State Fellowships for Visual Arts grant for ceramics representing Mississippi, further recognizing his contributions to the field.
