| ABOUT SHELBY KIZER
My name is Shelby Leigh Kizer. I am an artist living and working in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I graduated from William Carey with a Bachelors of Fine Art in painting and drawing in May of 2018.
In my work, I try to balance the beautiful, delicate watercolor techniques with unrefined marks painted from the gut. The physicality of working with different materials and layering them is something that holds my interest more so than just using a single material. The paintings on paper are layered with watercolor, pen, sharpies and acrylic paint. My paintings on canvas are layered with acrylic, pastel, and pencil. My paintings employ multi-step procedures to aggregate pigment to surface. Between steps I can take stock and make appropriate decisions. I have discovered in making these pieces that I understand the layering process better when using different materials, applied in sequence rather than all the same. The journey, the decision path, to the complete each of these pieces is just as important to me as the finished piece.
