OKEELALA CREEK POTTERY

ABOUT OKEELALA CREEK POTTERY

This pottery line was created in response to the beauty that is near the Okeelala Creek in Northeast Mississippi. The pottery is inspired by the changing seasons, the movement of the creek, and the forms of the land.

“I can remember the first rock I ever ‘collected’. I felt connected to it. I can play out the moment I saw it and picked it up anytime I choose, it is that vivid of a memory. And!-I still have that rock, it is the crowning jewel of ‘my life’s collection’. My life’s collection is just that, random, precious items that I have a connection with. It is an object that represents beauty, someone, or an event in my life.

I cherish these items and I’ve managed to keep them. I add new items to the ‘collection’ frequently. I knew at some point I would use these items. Arrangement of the textures from these objects is what gives Okeelala Creek Pottery a personal meaning….and I’m finally able to share these items that are connected to my heart strings. The items I make from these highly textured slabs of clay are also in response to land in North Mississippi near the Okeelala Creek. It’s a Southern thing too…..sitting deep on a porch, having red dirt on your feet, walking through the woods, enjoying those long summer evenings, and those clear winter nights…..these are all ideas wrapped up in the objects I make.”
